well I used this to learn how to make an animation first. then instead of using spirtes, you just put text and or images and vuala

I use the program "Unfreez" to do it, if you're looking for an alternative. It's free, and requires little to no effort to use. You just need to drag and drop .gif files into the window, choose the animation speed, and voila.
I've never tried animating with GIMP though, so I don't know if it's harder/easier that way or not.
